British Labour Party politician, elected to Parliament in May 2015. During the referendum campaign on British membership of the European Union, on 16 June 2016, as she was leaving a constituency meeting in the village of Birstall, she was shot and stabbed by a British nationalist on 16 June 2016: Thomas Mair (aged 52). She was a strong proponent of Britain remaining in the EU.

A police statement broadcast on CNN quoted her time of death as 13:38 BST in Leeds General Hospital.

She had previously worked for the charity, Oxfam, and was a campaigner on issues relating to the Syrian civil war. She was the first politician in the UK to be assassinated for 25 years.

She was married to Brendan Cox, and had 2 children.
