Biography
Russian royalty, the second son of Emperor Paul I of Russia and Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg.
He was heir to the throne during most of the reign of his older brother, Czar Alexander I, but secretly renounced his claim in 1822, after marrying his second wife in 1820. The fact that his renunciation had been kept quiet caused problems for his younger brother, Nicholas, when he ascended to the throne upon Alexander's death, triggering the Decembrist revolt on 14 December (jul.)/26 December (greg.) 1825.
He died of cholera in Vitebsk, Belarus on 15 June (jul.)/ 27 June (greg.) 1831.
