Belgian Flemish politician, a member of the Socialistische Partij Anders (SP.A). At the end of the 1995-1999 legislature, he resigned his post as Minister of Health because of the "dioxin affair", involving the dioxin contamination of feed intended for chicken farms.
He has a degree in social sciences (RUG) and is a sociologist; former extraordinary teacher (HIVT-RUCA). Since 1999 he has been a member of the board of the World Health Organization (WHO).
