Herbert Coleridge (at the age of 17)

Biography

British philologist, technically the first editor of what ultimately became the Oxford English Dictionary. He was a grandson of poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

He was the son of Sara and Henry Nelson Coleridge. He earned a double first in Classics and mathematics at Balliol College, Oxford. After graduation, he became a barrister, but, living off a small annuity, devoted most of his time and energy to linguistics studies. At age 27, as a member of the Philological Society, he formed a committee with Richard Chenevix Trench and Frederick Furnivall to identify and research words unlisted and undefined in English dictionaries of the period. The efforts of this committee eventually led to the development of the Oxford English Dictionary. A dedicated editor, he died on 23 April 1861 of tuberculosis at age 30 after completing some fundamental work for the project.

Source Notes

Sy Scholfield cites mother's record quoted in "The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge: Abbt to Byfield, Volume 1" (Routledge, 1980), p. 413: "p ~2, in SC's hand October 11th (1830). Herbert Coleridge, son of Henry Nelson & Sara Coleridge, was born at Hampstead, at a little past 11 in the forenoon." However, apparently October "11th" is a typo because Sarah Coleridge (Sara's mother), who was in attendance at the birth, wrote of the birth on the 8th of October: "On October 8, she described the event to Poole: "Yesterday forenoon, about 11 o'clock Sara was safely brought to bed of a boy..." ("Sara Coleridge, a Victorian Daughter: Her Life and Essays" by Bradford Keyes Mudge, Yale University Press, 1989, p. 54).
