Biography

French comedian, poet, chansonnier, goguettier and playwright. He is credited with at least 230 plays of which 50 had an runs of at least 100 consecutive performances. He was particularly known for his comédies en vaudeville.

Clairville had two sons. The composer Édouard-François Nicolaïe, known as Clairville fils (1854–1904) was from his marriage with Angélique Gabrielle Pagès. Charles-Albert Nicolaïe, known as "Clairvoyance" (1833–1892), an employee at the Comptoir d'Escompte de Paris, was born of an affair with Augustine Philippon. Claiville was the uncle of the playwright and librettist Charles-Victor Nicolaïe, known as Charles Clairville (1855-1927).

Clairville died of pneumonia on 8 February 1879 in Paris.

The birth certificate is quoted in "La Revue du siècle, littéraire, artistique & scientifique - Volume 3" (Bureau de la revue, 1889), pp. 405-406: "Son extrait de naissance est curieux, le voici : « Le 29janvier 1811, par devant nous, maire de Lyon, a comparu sieur Alexandre-Henrî Nicola'ie, dit Clairville, artiste dramatique, ... demeurant rue du Confort, lequel a présenté un enfant mâle, né hier matin, à sept heures, de lui comparant et de demoiselle Joséphine Degreville, son épouse, auquel enfant on a donné les prénoms de Louis-François-Marie..."
