Biography

French singer, songwriter, guitarist and composer, born to journalist François Chatel, he wrote and performed his own songs. Part of the first wave of 'Nouvelle Chanson française' (New French Songs), his first great popular success, "J't'aime bien Lili" (1977) was followed by titles like "Ma lycéenne," "Tout quitter mais tout emporter," and "Mister Hyde." He achieved worldwide success with "Émilie Jolie."

Chatel published a biography "Brassens" (1975) and the novels "Il reviendra" (1988) and "Émilie Jolie" (2004).

He suffered a serious vehicle accident near Aix-en-Provence in 2006. After a period in intensive care, he recovered from his injuries, except for mild facial paralysis of the jaw.

Chatel married and had two children. He died of a heart attack on 19 February 2021 in Paris, four days shy of his 73rd birthday.
