Biography

German resistance fighter against National Socialism (Nazism) and a member of the resistance group European Union.

Caro was arrested on 7 September 1943 in connection with the arrest of members of the European Union resistance group, including Robert Havemann and Georg Groscurth. The reason given for the arrest was stated to be that "he had given false documents to an illegal communist organization". During interrogation at Gestapo headquarters in Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse, Caro did not name any other members of the resistance group despite being tortured. On 18 April 1944 Walter Caro was transported to Auschwitz, where he was probably murdered in the gas chambers on 20 April 1944.
