English-Australian newsmaker from a noted family, he is the nephew of Australian artist Brett Whiteley (1939-1992), the son of Whiteley's older sister Frannie Hopkirk. He made the news in June 2010 when he denied having ever owned an untitled nude, an ink on paper, attributed to his uncle and subsequently withdrawn from sale at an art auction after Carlisle denied being part of its provenance as wrongly claimed by the auction house. Wendy Whiteley, Brett's former wife and copyright holder of his art, declared the work a fake.
- other kin relationship with Whiteley, Brett (born 7 April 1939). Notes: Uncle/ nephew
From his mother's biography, Brett: A portrait of Brett Whiteley by his sister by Frannie Hopkirk (Pan, 2013): "Daniel Thomas Defoe Carlisle was born in University College Hospital at 2.10 pm on 30 July 1974. Russell had said on the night we met that we would one day have a son and here he was, born into the incredible loveliness of an English summer."
