Biography

German humorist, poet, illustrator and painter, the author and sketcher of delightful children and young adult stories, who published comic illustrated cautionary tales from 1859, achieving his most notable works in the 1870s. Busch's illustrations used wood engraving, and later, zincography.

Sy Scholfield quotes from "Wann hatte Wilhelm Busch Geburtstag??" by Carol Galway, Germanic Notes and Reviews, Spring 2000, Volume 31, number 1: pp. 14-18 (p. 16): "Ich hatte nie Grund, an der Richtigkeit des Geburtsdatums 15. April 1832 zu zweifeln, bis ich während Recherchen im Archiv der Wilhelm-Busch-Gesellschaft in Hannover eine Geburtsurkunde für Wilhelm Busch fand. Ausgestellt am 26. September 1847, rückt diese Geburtsurkunde die bis dahin eher nebensächlich erscheinenden Diskrepanzen über das Geburtsdatum in ein anderes Licht, denn dort ist der vierzehnte April 1832 als das Geburtsdatum von Wilhelm Busch verzeichnet. . . . Da immerhin die Möglichkeit eines Schreibfehlers bei der Erstellung der Geburtsurkunde bestand, konnte nur noch das Kirchenbuch Aufschluß geben, denn vor der Einführung staatlicher Register über den Personenstand am 1. Januar 1876 dienten Kirchenbücher auch gleich als staatliche Urkunden. Das Kirchenbuch für die Gemeinde des Fleckens Wiedensahl im Stifte Loccum bestätigt die Richtigkeit der Geburtsurkunde auf Blatt 61 verso, gültig für das Jahr 1832: geboren d. 14ten April Morgens 6 Uhr.4 Das Kirchenbuch wurde von 1811 bis 1841 von Prediger Dietrich Georg Eberhard Krop verwaltet und geführt. Dieser hat Busch getauft und auch die Kirchenbucheintragung für ihn vorgenommen. Am 10. Oktober 1841 übernahm der Pastor Hermann Georg Albrecht Wilhelm Nöldeke das Amt. Er war es, der die Geburtsurkunde ausgestellt hat. Da das Kirchenbuch zur Zeit von Büschs Geburt das amtliche Verzeichnis war, sollte dieses Datum als das eigentliche Geburtstag von Busch gelten. Weitere Nachforschungen in den Briefen und Dokumenten Buschs gaben keine weiteren Aufschlüsse."

Translation: I never had reason to doubt the correctness of the date of birth, 15 April 1832, until while searching in the archives of the Wilhelm-Busch-Gesellschaft in Hannover I found a birth certificate for Wilhelm Busch. Issued on 26 September 1847 that birth certificate puts the hitherto rather trivial discrepancies appearing on the birth date in a different light, because there the fourteenth April 1832 is listed as the date of birth of Wilhelm Busch. . . . The possibility of a clerical error in the preparation of the birth certificate could only be checked at the church register, because before the introduction of the state register of civil status on 1 January 1876 church records held the same status as state records. The church book for the congregation of the patch Wiedensahl in pins Loccum confirmed the accuracy of the birth certificate on leaf 61 verso, valid for the year 1832, born 14th April in the morning at 6 o'clock. The church book was managed from 1811 to 1841 by preacher Dietrich Georg Eberhard Krop who baptized Busch and made the church register entry for him. On 10 October 1841, Pastor Hermann Georg Albrecht Wilhelm Nöldeke took office. It was he who drew up the birth certificate. Since the church register at the time of Büsch's birth was the official list, this date should be regarded as the actual birthday of Busch. Further investigation into the letters and documents Busch gave no further clues.

Scholfield notes that various biographies incorrectly give 15 April, for example: Wilhelm Busch by Friedrich Bohne (Fretz & Wasmuth, 1958), p. 21: ‎"Enkel Wilhelm Busch, der in Wiedensahl am 15. April 1832, am Sonntag vor Ostern, frühmorgens sechs Uhr, geboren"; "... Gottlos und beneidenswert" by Ulrich Beer (Ehernwirth, 1982), p. 165: "1832 Am 15 April - am Sonntag Palmarum - wird morgens um 6 Uhr Heinrich Christian Wilhelm Busch in Wiedensahl geboren, einem Dörfchen im Stiftsbezirk des Zisterzienserklosters Loccum im Königreich Hannover ..."; Wilhelm Busch: der lachende Pessimist : eine Biographie by Eva Weissweiler (Kiepenheuer & Witsch, 2007), p. 15: "Und am 15. April 1832, einem Sonntag vor Ostern, gut drei Wochen nach dem Tod Goethes, der kurz vorher seinen »Faust II« vollendet hatte, wurde um sechs Uhr morgens der erste Sohn dieses jungen Paares geboren, ..."
