Chilean writer, historian and diplomat, married to the writer and painter Marta Cárdenas Villanueva (better known by his pen name of Luz de Viana). President of the Chilean Academy of History from 1949 to 1962. He graduated as a lawyer on 9 August 1909. He began his activities in public administration as Secretary of the Central Bureau of Statistics; He also served as Secretary to the President of the Republic Juan Luis Sanfuentes. He continued his work in the administration as governor of Magallanes, before being appointed Inspector of Treasury. He was appointed Plenipotentiary of Chile to the Permanent Commission of the Conference on Operation and Conservation of the Marine Resources of the South Pacific and, later, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Chile in Peru between 1954 and 1958. He was in constant contact with art, as a faculty member of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music Arts and Sciences at the University of Chile. As Full Member of the Chilean Academy of History, he started Medal No. 30, assuming replacement Solar Eduardo Correa.
He died on 19 January 1970.
