Biography
French homicide victim, she was slain by serial killer Henri Désiré Landru (1869-1922) who murdered at least seven women in the village of Gambais between December 1915 and January 1919.
Homely, trusting and semi-literate, Célestine Buisson was one of several women who answered Landru's 1 May 1915 lonely hearts advertisement in Le Journal. Born in southwest France, Buisson was a widow who worked as a housekeeper and was lonely after the mobilization of her only son, who was illegitimate. Landru, alias Georges Frémyet, became "engaged" to Buisson immediately, but then put off their marriage for more than two years, pleading lost identity documents and long "business trips" abroad.
Landru murdered her on 1 September 1917 in Gambais when she was aged 46.
