Biography
Dutch American astronomer.
He was fourth of six children of Martinus Brouwer (1 March 1875, Schiedam - 14 August 1940, Amsterdam) and Louisa van Wamelen (14 July 1873, Schiedam - 5 April 1922, Rotterdam), who married 18 May 1899 in Schiedam.
He received his Ph.D. 12 April 1927 at Leiden University under astronomer Willem de Sitter. In Leiden he was able to determine that the mass of Titan, a moon of Saturn, could be determined from its influence on other Saturnian moons.
On 1 November 1928, he married Johanna Antonia Mathilda de Graaf (23 Dec 1901) in Rotterdam. They got a son, James Martin (1 April 1932, New Haven, Ct).
At Yale University he specialised in celestial bodies. With W.J. Eckert and Gerald M. Clemence, he wrote Astronomical papers prepared for the use of the American ephemeris and nautical almanac using digital computers.
From 1941 until his death in 1966 he was editor of the Astronomical Journal.
He died in 1966 of heart disease.
Asteroid 1746 and a moon crater were named after him .
