Branwell Brontë (self-portrait, 1840)


English painter, writer and poet, the only son of the Brontë family, and the brother of the writers Charlotte, Emily and Anne.

He died on 24 September 1848.

Sy Scholfield cites the diary of the Brontë family's close friend Elizabeth Firth, as quoted in various books including "A writer's notes on his trade" by C. E. Montague (London: Chatto, 1930), p. 177: "June 26th. Went to see Mrs. Bronte. Branwell Patrick was born early in the morning."
