George (1922) Blake

Biography

British spy who worked as a double agent for the Soviet Union. He became a Communist and decided to work for the MGB while a prisoner during the Korean War. Discovered in 1961 and sentenced to 42 years in prison, he escaped from Wormwood Scrubs prison in west London in 1966 and fled to the Soviet Union. He was not one of the Cambridge Five spies, although he associated with Donald Maclean and Kim Philby after reaching the Soviet Union.

A double agent for nine years, he acted as a spy for England while delivering top secrets to Russia. On 1 September 1948, he was appointed Vice-Consul. Amazingly, he was not arrested as a spy until 4 April 1961. On 23 October 1954, while still a spy, he married. At his trial in May 1961, he was given a prison sentence of 42 years. Blake escaped his confinement on 22 October 1966 and fled to Russia with the aid of Sean Bourke. The entire escape saga was related in a drama by Bourke entitled "The Springing of George Blake," 1970.

Blake died on 26 December 2020, aged 98, in Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin, himself an ex-KGB agent, expressed his "deep condolences" to Blake's family and friends in a message published on the Kremlin website.
