American newspaper cartoonist awarded the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. He was a Pulitzer finalist in 1984, 1989, 1992, and 1994, and has served as president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. His cartoons have been collected in a number of books.

He was the cartoonist for the Arizona Republic (1980-1990, 1991-2019) and the Tacoma Morning News Tribune (1990). Benson is now the staff political cartoonist for Arizona Mirror news and his work continues to be nationally distributed by Creators Syndicate.

He is the grandson of former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and former LDS Church president Ezra Taft Benson. He is an atheist and former Latter Day Saint.
