German sculptor noted for his abstract works, and university professor who taught many later noted sculptors such as Hans Dieter Bohnet, Bruno Knittel, Fritz Melis and Eva Zippel.

In 1977, on his 77th birthday, Baum, who had had suicidal thoughts since his youth, committed suicide in Esslingen after a serious illness.
