German actor who began his career as a theatre actor, often cast in comedic roles, in ensemble performances at the Kassel Court Theatre, the Royal Playhouse Berlin and the Berlin Thalia Theatre.
Bartels debuted in film in late 1915, appearing alongside Henny Porten in Der Schirm mit dem Schwan. This was followed by numerous silent films, mostly comedies, including appearances opposite Ilse Bois and Helene Voss. Bartels succeeded in transitioning to sound film, performing until the 1930s.
In 1920 Bartels married operetta singer Kate Mann. He died on 1 September 1961 in Braunschweig, aged 72.
