German stage actor and leading theatre director (dramas and comedies) in Berlin. The rise of the National Socialists (Nazis) led to the abrupt end of his work. He emigrated in 1933 and came via Austria and various European countries finally in 1937 to the United States, where he took a teaching career in dramaturgy and acting. Victor Barnowsky died on 9 August 1952 in New York City, aged 76.
