American writer, a critic of rock musicians and their work, whose first piece appeared in "Rolling Stone" magazine on 5 April 1969. He was known for his acerbic criticism and barbs aimed at the mighty and the fallen.

A prolific writer, he was banned from the magazine in 1973 after several years of contributions because of his "disrespectful" attitude. The prohibition against him lasted until 1978. He joined "Creem" as its critic where he could continue his critiques and moralizing without penalty. There he became an editor but quit in 1976 over a salary dispute. Wanting to write about more serious topics, he never quite hit his stride. Bangs fought him own demons of alcoholism and joined Alcoholics Anonymous in 1981 after a stint Austin, Texas.

He was found dead in his New York City apartment on 30 April 1982, aged 33. He had evidently overdosed on prescription drugs.

Nick Dagan Best cites the biography Let it Blurt: The Life and Times of Lester Bangs, America's Greatest Rock Critic by Jim Derogatis. In the book, he says Bangs "was born without complications at two minutes before eleven on the night of December 13, 1948." (p.1). In the index he says he quotes the birth certificate.

Sy Scholfield quotes same data from birth notice, Weekly Times-Advocate (Escondido, California), Friday 17 Dec 1948, page 2, "born to Mr. and Mrs. Conway Bangs at 10:58 p.m., Monday, weighing 8 pounds 8 ounces at the Escondido Community Hospital."
