Charles François Bailly de Messein

Biography

Canadian Roman Catholic bishop, active in the British province of Quebec during the American Revolutionary War. He is best known for his Loyalist activism during the American invasion of Quebec, when he was injured during the Battle of Saint-Pierre, and for publicly supporting a planned university that his bishop opposed. He died on May 20, 1794, aged 53, at Quebec City, Lower Canada.

Roy, 1917), p. 227: "ACTE DE NAISSANCE DE CHARLES-FRANÇOIS BAILLY DE MESSEIN (MONTREAL). — Le quatrième novembre mil sept cent quarante a été Bâtisé par moy vicaire soussigné francois Charles né le jour précèdent a cinq heures du soir, fils De Mr françois augustin Bailly De Messen ecuyer et de Dame Marie anne Desgoutin ..."
