American athlete, an Olympic swimmer at age 15. She is the holder of gold and silver medals from the 1972 and 1976 Olympics in addition to several world championships. Her brother Jack was also an Olympic swimmer. Considered one of the best American swimmers ever, she won five World Championships and took 27 national titles. In 1982 she was inducted into the Swimming Hall of Fame; five years later in 1987 she was inducted into the Olympics Hall of Fame.

She has railed against the use of performance enhancing drugs and in 1976 accused the strong East German Olympic team of using steroids. Since she had only taken the silver that year, she was criticized as a sore loser and was given the moniker "Surly Shirley." She proved to be right when later the then East German coaches admitted to having given their team steroids.

Babashoff is now a mail carrier for the US Postal Service.
