Biography
Swiss theatrical designer and theorist; devoted from 1888 to reforming the techniques of stage presentation to more futuristic trends. Influenced by classic Greek theater and French symbolism, he proposed projected lighting in three-dimensional, abstract scenery placed on multi-level stages. He moved the actor away from cliché poses. Author of "Music and the Art of Theatre".
