American race horse known as one of the best horses of the century, along with Man o' War. Sired by Bold Ruler out of Something Royal, an 18-year-old mare, Secretariat was born in the Meadow Farm foaling barn. A big foal, he was pretty, with three white feet, and grew into a magnificent animal. He was a Triple Crown champion in 1973, the first since Citation in 1948.

Secretariat was put down on 4 october 1989, 11:45 AM, at Clairborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky, due to a painful hoof disease.

Sy Scholfield quotes from two books: "Secretariat" by Timothy T. Capps (2002), p. 57: "The Meadow stud [near Doswell, Virginia, p. 18] . . . There, shortly after midnight on March 30, 1970, she [Somethingroyal] produced a colt, a big one, without complications, according to farm records;" and "Secretariat" by William Nack (Hyperion, 2010), p. 5: "Gentry looked at his watch. It was ten minutes after midnight, March 30, 1970, the moment the whole foal emerged."
