Biography
California condor baby, the first ever conceived in captivity and hatched with human help (an E-section) at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. It cost as much as a F-16 jet fighter to produce, a $20 million egg. Zoo officials rejoiced as the chick was their hope to preserve a dying species with only 28 known condors left alive.
The condor parents have been three years in a 40' X 90' X 22' cage and finally mated in January 1988. The female laid three eggs on March 3rd and they were put in an incubator, taking 55 days to hatch. The surviving chick, an ungainly 7 oz. picked its way out of its shell with a good appetite and is being fed chopped mice.
The name Molloko is the Naidu Indian word for condor.
