Biography

American novelist, journalist, poet, screenwriter and film critic, whose autobiographical novel, A Death in the Family (1957), won him a posthumous 1958 Pulitzer Prize. In the 1940s, he was one of the most influential film critics in the USA.

James Agee married three times and had four children. A hard drinker and chain-smoker, he suffered a fatal heart attack in a taxi cab en route to a doctor's appointment in New York City on 16 May 1955. He was 45.
