American accident, a disastrous explosion of an offshore oil rig that left 11 employees dead, at least 15 injured and millions of gallons of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico and on the shores of the adjoining states for a period of weeks.A second explosion occurred two days later at about 10:22 AM. The Louisiana shoreline and fishing industry have so far borne the brunt of the environmental fallout, which continues to be exacerbated as the current carry the oil further. The total impact on human lives and on the environment as well as costs of clean-up continue to rise. On May 26, 2010 BP tried a "top kill" method to stem the flood but has so far been unsuccessful as of a week later.

Finally in August 2010 the oil flow was stemmed.

PT quotes an article by Ramon Antonio Vargas in The Times-Picayune for time of blast. The explosion occurred offshore "50 miles southeast of Venice" according to the article.
