American singer and actress who was originally dubbed "The Queen of Punk," primarily because of her outrageous attire and tacky image. She eventually became a top superstar due to her unerring instinct for exhibitionism with the ability to shock the public and grab the attention of the media. Her primary attention-getter was sex of course, but coupled with vulgarity, bad taste, political impropriety and indiscretion. On the Letterman TV Show of 3/31/1994, she may have reached a high-point (or perhaps one of a series of low points) when she invited Dave to sniff her panties, puffed a cigar, insulted Dave and kissed up to his guests, wondered whether Dave urinated in the shower and ending up talking about nose-picking. It is possible that she overestimated her own wit and underestimated public taste.

Madonna is from a large Italian family with an engineer dad who was a by-the-book, God-fearing man. At six, she watched her mom fade away with cancer, pleading with her mom to get well and play, and she always mourned not having a mother. It was the only time she ever saw her dad cry. For two years, she was fearful of her own mortality, and vomited when she had to leave the house. She slept with Daddy and used her status as the eldest daughter to fight off six siblings.

When her dad remarried, it was a betrayal. She had to be tough, to not care, not need anyone. She made herself a star from the time she was ten, and held onto her stardom with ferocious tenacity ever since. She developed early and flirted with all the boys, so her reputation took an inevitable nosedive. By the time she was in the 7th grade, every boy was claiming a score and she was the class slut. A natural-born rebel, she did crazy things; shoplifting, going to church naked under her coat, sneaking to her pal's house to watch TV shows that were forbidden at home, skipping school or church. She fought with her dad, mostly about religion, considering her Catholic upbringing a farce. Her biographer writes that she completed her first sex at 15.

In the 9th grade, she started going to a dance school and the director, Christopher Flynn, introduced her to the grown-up world of art, theater, gay clubs, dance bars. Her wildness wowed everyone. She smoked marijuana, wore clothes that clashed, became a vegetarian, and had her first sex with an older boy. High school did not fit any more, but she stayed long enough to graduate a semester early in 1976.

Madonna fled from Michigan to New York at 17 with $35 in her pocket. She took a series of jobs and lived in decrepit apartments while dancing with the Pearl Lang company. In the fall of 1978 she was sexually assaulted at knife-point. She was a steady couple with DJ- record producer John "Jellybean" Benitez from 1982 to 1985, when she aborted a pregnancy by him.

From the time she cut her first record, she was on the fast track. Her hit album "Madonna" had made her a household name but 1984's "Like a Virgin" shot her into superstardom, a stratospheric post she has held ever since. All 13 of her singles were top ten hits.

Madonna met Sean Penn in February 1985 and they were together from the first as a couple, being married on 8/16/1985. She had a second abortion that year; though it was traumatic, the timing was not right. The wedding was turned into a nightmare by the intrusion of the press who then gave them increasingly bad reviews for their childish rude manners and exhibitionism. The marriage lasted 27 months, finally breaking up in December 1987. Her happiest marriage was with the media; ultimately it was the camera with which she got off.

Her first two films had poor reviews and made little impact, "Desperately Seeking Susan," and "Shanghai Surprise," but as her stage shows became more dynamic and her film work more skilled, her rise was phenomenal.

By mid-1988 she was spending all her time with Sandra Bernhard, with whom she later confirmed an affair. By 1991, her friend, Cuban Ingrid Casares, was a companion for some years.

She published a book entitled "Sex," released in October 1992. Sales were brisk as it contained nude pictures of her along with S&M camp and various exploitive shots. Sex sells. Controversy sells. In 1979 she had taken nude pictures for Playboy and Penthouse which were not released until August 1985. Her "Truth or Dare" video was released on 5/17/1991. She began a three-year affair with bodyguard Jim Albright in February 1991 to January 1994.

Madonna met personal trainer Carlos Leon on 9/08/1995 and they had a baby together, Lourdes, on 10/14/1996. They separated in May 1997, remaining on friendly terms.

To handle the celebrity glare, Madonna has her homes hermetically sealed with guards, hidden cameras and an electric-eye gate. But out in public, she is fully on-stage. Journalist treat her with respect; she is smart, sassy and fearlessly frank and never ducks a question. After the birth of Lourdes, whom she calls Lola, she was more open in communicating her own sense of spiritual striving.

By 2000, Madonna was once more with child, the result of her love affair with British director Guy Ritchie, 32. Going into labor three weeks early, she was rushed into Cedars-Sinai Hospital with abdominal pains and losing blood. Doctors acted quickly with an emergency Caesarian section; she had a detached placenta, cutting off the baby's oxygen supply. Rocco Ritchie, 5 lbs 9 oz, was born on 8/11/2000, 5:52 AM PDT, Los Angeles, Ca (News Online). A devoted mother, Madonna is delighted. Ritchie was by her side the entire time.

Ritchie is apparently a steadying influence as Madonna dropped the slutty style that that was her trademark for so long for a softer, more mature image. The couple married on 12/22/2000 at Skibo Castle in Scotland. Her new husband, Guy Ritchie, was born September 10, 1968, Hatfield Herts.

After locking lips with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 28, 2003, Madonna is trying on another role - that of children’s book author. "The English Roses" was launched in London on September 14, 2003.

Since 1998 Madonna had been studying Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism for , and in June 2004 announced that she had taken the name of Esther after the Old Testament Queen who saved the Jews from annihilation.

In a fall from a horse on her birthday, August 16, 2005, the entertainer sustained three cracked ribs as well as a broken collarbone and a broken bone in her hand.

She and her husband Guy Ritchie arrived in Malawi in early October 2006 to adopt a 13-month old boy named David, a motherless child placed in an orphanage by his dad. The adoption process did not go as smoothly as the star had hoped. After human rights advocates protested, claiming that her celebrity status and wealth got in the way of following proper procedures to prevent child exploitation, the Malawi government granted Madonna an “interim order” granting temporary custody.

Her “Confessions on A Dance Floor” won a 2007 Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album.

Her adoption of a David Banda, a two-year-old from Mali, became official on May 28, 2008.

She announced plans to divorce Guy Ritchie on October 15, 2008. Wanting another child, Madonna decided to adopt a young girl from Malawi. On June 12, 2009 the high court of that country granted the request, and the three-year-old girl, named Mercy Chifundo James, was flown to London on June 20th.

Tashi Grady quotes Madonna's dad for birth time, confirmed by LMR on e-mail with Tashi on 7/24/96: "My girlfriend worked for Madonna in her management office and was on speaking terms with her father. We called him one evening and he called the hospital who looked up the records; it was 7:05 AM. I met Madonna and she is very tuned into meditation (the 12th house), loves the mystical and feels a sense of responsibility to the collective transcendence."

Erin Sullivan quotes an email from Helen Stillwell (CPA Student) in which she writes, "On 12/16/1998, Channel 4 in London, Madonna was interviewed by a young guy... She asked him what sign he was....she told him she was a Leo with an 'Aquarius Ascendant.'" He talked about a letter that Madonna had written to him which made quite an impression on him. The cameraman actually showed the hand-written letter. I almost leapt from my seat when I noticed at the top of the letter she had written her name and birth date, August 16, 1959. I'm probably the only viewer to react this way (or even notice). I thought I might have been mistaken but a few minutes later they showed the hand-written letter again and this time I was standing up with my face near the TV. It read 1959 in her (italicized) writing." (Is it possible that Madonna gives out different data in an attempt to preserve privacy?)

Pat Taglilatelo adds in 2008 that she has in hand a copy of Lourdes' [Madonna's daughter] birth certificate which gives Madonna's birth year as 1958.
