French politician who helped crush the rebellion in Vendee 1793 and assisted in Robespierre's downfall 1794, voting for the death of Louis XVI. He was the Minister of Interior Security in 1799, supporting the coup of Brumaire. Despite his assistance to Bonaparte, he made the emperor nervous with his intrigues, and Napoleon fired him for two years but then rehired him. However, in 1810, the emperor once more sent him off when he learned that Fouche was having secret talks with foreign powers.

He moved to Italy as an exile in 1816.

Died 12/26/1820, Trieste, Italy
