The Federation of Australian Astrologers' Journal
Astrodienst is proud to team up with The Federation of Australian Astrologers (www.faainc.org.au) to bring you a selection of articles from the FAA Journal, its quarterly magazine published at the equinoxes and solstices. The first journal was published in April 1971 amidst the Jupiter-Neptune conjunctions in early Sagittarius that year. This is the FAA's main publication, which unites affiliate organizations across the nation. Each edition includes a wide range of interesting articles from Aussie and international astrologers celebrating all paths of astrology. The FAA Journal supports and welcomes new voices who are dedicated and passionate about their astrological craft.
Every three months we will publish one article from the current issue of the FAA Journal. In the intervening months, we will bring you an article from the Journal's recent archives. Month by month, this will build into an astrological library – a small taster of what the FAA Journal has to offer!

Personally, the great gift of astrology has been its constant reminder that we inhabit two worlds, the temporal and the eternal; living in both an embodied and ensouled world, having an outer and inner life. As a young man, I felt awkward with my intuition, feelings, and imagination. Encountering the astrological paradigm offered me a way to translate psychic images into psychological language, to confront and celebrate complexes of being as intricate parts of who I am.

When we think of Uranus, we think of sudden changes, unexpected developments and events that can turn our world upside down in the blink of an eye. As an agent of chaos, rupture and shock, Uranus can evoke anxiety and dread as we humans become very attached to sameness and the feeling of security. Horary Question: Will I be physically and emotionally safe? The querent lives in New Zealand, ranked as the worst developed country in the OECD for family violence.1 This context is important because on the Full Moon of 17th January 2022, after 34 years of marriage, the querent packed her car, wrote a note, and left her husband. Years of conflict and power struggles had left her too mentally and physically exhausted to want any further face-to-face communication.

As my friend and colleague Brian Clark is fond of saying, transits are about participation rather than anticipation. And with four of the outermost planets—Saturn to Pluto—moving sign in the coming months, 2025 is an opportunity to be actively involved in these changing times. The astrology I practise focuses on honouring the planets and recognising the invitation in the transit. So once we determine what is being activated in our chart during 2025, we can ask: Which part of our sacred contract are we being asked to read, understand, explore and carry out differently?

The 4 elements make up all that is around us, we are used to experiencing them as the seasons change. But what of the elements within us? Many ancient cultures came to similar ideas of how the elements work within our bodies, flowing in health or being blocked in times of disease/imbalance.

If you are an astrologer who regularly reads charts, you will almost certainly have found that people seek you out around their Saturn Return, when they are 27-30 years old. Similarly, many people will consult an astrologer near their Chiron Return, which occurs at age 49-52, closing the longest planetary cycle of our life thus far.

The rhythm of the Moon gives us the rhythm of nature. We evolved with the Moon governing the ebb and flow of natural energy. Once in harmony with nature's energy, it is surprising how easily we can take care of ourselves, our health, gardens, farms, pets, and animals. Basically, we need to pay attention to two rules: Moon phases which are waxing and waning, and Moon signs, which are either fertile or barren.

Both Jupiter and Uranus share an unrestrained, adventuresome, often stormy, character. As boundary crossers, both disrupt social and collective patterns through expansion, inflation, rebellion or interruption. The convergence of these two planets evokes images of innovative shifts in education, culture, religion and science, as well as liberation movements, original trends, and collective protests in response to an intensification of social inequality. It suggests a growth of Promethean qualities, a spirit of change and rebellion against rigid definitions and structures.

The 27 Club is a notional list of musicians, artists or actors who died at age twenty seven, often as a result of drug and alcohol abuse, or violent means such as homicide, suicide, or transportation-related accidents. Originally, the deaths of several twenty-seven-yearold musicians, namely Brian Jones from The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and James Morrison from The Doors between 1969 and 1971 led to popular supposition that deaths are more common at this age.

Munakara is a word used to describe a condition arrived at through a particular sequence of planetary rulerships. Munakara is a two-step process based on the planetary sect principle that each of the seven original planets can be divided into either the diurnal or the nocturnal sect. This is determined by whether a planet’s qualities (hot, cold, wet and dry) are compatible with, or modified by, their belonging to one of the two sect divisions.

There has been a lot of rhetoric about genders in the media. When filling in forms, there are often three boxes you can tick. Are you female, male or other? Emotive articles are frequently in the news concerning gender identity and gender politics. Astrology often employs the terms ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ to describe the different qualities or energies of the signs and planets.

Considered to be the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees, Goodall is best known for her 45-year study of social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania. She is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and has worked extensively on conservation and animal welfare issues.

Since 1939 Pluto has been moving at roughly the same rate as Neptune, and the two planets change sign at almost the same time. Because of this we have quite specific generational tendencies, described by the signs of Neptune and Pluto. This dance between the two outer planets continues until the 2040s: a hundred years of sextile companionship which defines the underlying themes of 7 generations.

A few years ago a woman named Anna came for a consultation. She was in her late 50s, in the midst of her second Saturn Return. Australian, of Chinese descent, she was the mother of a student of mine who was learning Craniosacral Therapy. Anna had just come back from Peru where she’d been participating in ceremonies using plant medicines such as Peyote and Ayahuasca. She told me that in Peru she had been using these medicines to create a direct line to the energies underlying each of the planets.

From a very young age, I was fascinated by the idea of discovering my life’s calling and purpose. In my vivid imagination, I thought an angel messenger would come and speak my calling to me, clearly letting me know what I was here to do. Two major ingresses occur in March 2023: Saturn enters Pisces March 7th, while Pluto enters Aquarius for the first time on the 23rd. Amidst these celestial thresholds, Jupiter and Chiron conjoin March 12th, inaugurating their cycle that unfolds over the next 13 years. Their new cycle invites us to reconsider their archetypal bond and how we may be more conscious of weaving their ways of wisdom together.

The Federation of Australian Astrologers is a non-profit organization that unites our Australian astrological community. The Federation of Australian Astrologers was founded on July 8, 1970 and has been the unifying structure for the practice, profession, education and participation in astrology ever since. So much so we often call the FAA the Family of Australian Astrologers. Besides our well-respected journal the FAA has an ongoing exam system which leads to the FAA Diploma, international conferences and affiliate associations which provide monthly meetings, webinars, newsletters and friendly interactions amongst members.
