"I'm really in pursuit of greatness"
-- said the Capricorn star
Despite his French name and dual nationality, Timothée Chalamet, star of the recent Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, is a native New Yorker who grew up in ‘Hell’s Kitchen’, one of the less affluent areas of Manhattan, in a block subsidised for artists. Chalamet, who has five planets including the Sun, Mars and Mercury – his chart ruler – in Capricorn, is not short on ambition. On winning the 2024 Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actor he stated, “I wanna be one of the greats”.
Chalamet was expressing an intention here. Perhaps one he formed at his progressed New Moon in June 2019, around the time he started working on “becoming Dylan”. The progressed New Moon fell in the 5th house at 29 degrees Capricorn - a signature for self-expression through hard graft, determination and focus. It sat on his natal Uranus indicating that independence and originality would be part of the mix, and trined his MC in Taurus suggesting his aspirations would be recognised in the public realm.
YouTube interviews reveal Chalamet to be an actor with an exceptional work ethic and commitment to his craft. So, it would not be surprising if he succeeded in his goal. He also has considerable talent. His performances have been described as so natural and convincing that he “makes the rest look like they’re acting” (pajiba.com).
Several chart factors feed into Chalamet’s ability to morph seamlessly into the character he is playing. The first is the attention to detail of the Virgo Ascendant which enables him to approach each new role with skill and flexibility. This is supported by the discipline offered by the planets in Capricorn, especially the Sun, which trines the Ascendant. Capricorn also gives the drive to master a role, pushing him to achievement and material success.
As chart ruler, Mercury represents much more than ‘communication’ in Chalamet’s horoscope. Conjunct Neptune, glamourous symbol of dreams, imagination and film, the Trickster brings the whole chart with it as it dissolves into the god of the sea, enabling Chalamet to express himself (5th) through the dissolution of his own personality (Neptune).
The Mercury/Neptune conjunction is exact to just 24’ of arc and forms a t-square with the nodes suggesting that here is the key to the destiny and the dream - if Chalamet is strong enough to shape it. Additionally, the North Node falls on Spica, the most fortunate fixed star in the heavens, in the 2nd house of talents and resources. Timothée has no lack of the former and is rapidly amassing the latter.
This cardinal t-square brings in Mars and Uranus on either side of Mercury/Neptune. Mars, exalted in Capricorn, suggests relentless, focused energy, while Uranus offers originality and independence - someone who is not afraid to stand out from the crowd.
The glamorous and imaginative theme seen in Chalamet’s Mercury/Neptune conjunction is echoed in his Pisces planets. The Moon and Saturn sit in the 7th house of “how we are seen by the world” (Sasportas, The Twelve Houses).
Sensitive Saturn in Pisces rules the entire Capricorn collection lending these planets a symbolic underlayer of - again - dreams, feeling, imagination, glamour and film. Pisces Saturn imbues these potentially quite rigid planetary energies with a certain fluidity. This Saturn makes almost no aspects and its isolation in the realm of other people perhaps suggests an underlying fear of not succeeding, of being carried away and drowning on a tide of illusion and self-doubt. However, the sextile to Mars anchors it to strategy and material reality, indicating that Chalamet has the capacity to overcome any lack of confidence and to plough on towards success.
The Pisces Moon is emotional and sensitive, a changeling. At 27 degrees it is almost at the end of the zodiac and contains within it all the other signs, suggesting that Chalamet holds the entire range of human experience within his unconscious, instinctive responses. Another factor which enables him to morph into anyone he chooses.
The cusp of Chalamet’s 10th house in the Equal system is in versatile Gemini so, like the Ascendant, this most public point of his chart is ruled by Mercury/Neptune, reflecting artistry and the glamour of the film industry. The 4th/10th house axis also tells us about our internal experience of our parents. In the 10th we see his mother – actress, dancer and real estate agent Nicole Flender – aptly described by the Mercury/Neptune conjunction. In Capricorn and conjunct Mars, this might also imply an expectation that her son would be materially successful.
The Moon, symbol of the nurturing experience and often the mother, sextiles Mercury/Neptune, suggesting a fluctuating, perhaps idealised, emotional closeness between mother and son. The presence of Uranus indicates that the relationship allows them both freedom as well as connection.
Marc Chalamet appears in Timothée’s chart as Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 4th house of the father and the ancestors. Jupiter, strong in its own sign, portrays a confident, optimistic figure and is the perfect signature for a father from another country. Jupiter is the only planet in fire in a chart that is dominated by practical earth and emotional water, suggesting that Marc Chalamet contributes positively to his son’s confidence and faith in life.
Venus is something of an outlier in Timothée’s chart. Situated in Aquarius in the 6th house she makes just a minor aspect to the Sun and a wide trine to Chiron. She is also the only personal planet in air.
Venus in the birth chart represents what we desire and are attracted to. She is the repository of our values and describes how we relate. Aquarius is friendly, idealistic, freedom-loving and independent so it is perhaps Venus which gives Chalamet the ability to detach from his roles and not be swallowed by them.
At 29, Timothée Chalamet has already made his mark on the film industry and has been nominated for a clutch of awards. However, A Complete Unknown is a film for which he will undoubtedly be remembered in years to come - a movie as iconic as it is outstanding. Unsurprisingly then, it was for this picture that he won the SAG Award for Best Actor on 23 February 2025, just a week after the final pass of his Saturn Return.
