Harriette Wilson

British Regency courtesan, whose clients included the Prince of Wales, the Lord Chancellor and four future Prime Ministers. Among her other lovers with whom she had a business arrangement was Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, who commented "publish, and be damned" when informed of her plans to write her memoirs. Her decision to publish was partly based on the broken promises of her lovers to provide her with an income in her older age. The memoirs are still in print.

Her sisters Amy, Fanny and Sophia also became courtesans. Sophia married respectably into the aristocracy, when she wed Lord Berwick, at 17. She died on March 10, 1845.

Source Notes

Sy Scholfield quotes the book, "The Game of Hearts: Harriette Wilson's Memoirs" (Simon and Schuster, 1955 [1825]), p. 503: "I am not ugly, as they describe me in the papers; but on the contrary rather handsome, particularly by candlelight when I am amused - although I was born at ten minutes before eight o'clock, the 22 February 1786 and christened at St. George's Church - I love to be particular."

Wilson does not state whether she was born in the a.m. or p.m. so both charts are given.
