Eli Whitney


American inventor with two claims to fame, first, his cotton gin which made cotton growing profitable and helped to make the U.S. the largest producer in the world; and, second, his method of making guns by machinery, which marked the beginning of mass production in the U.S.

Died on 8 January 1825.
