German Physiologist, Medical doctor and biologist. He discovered the root cause of cancer in 1923. He was director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (now Max Planck Institute) for cell physiology. He investigated the metabolism of tumors and the respiration of cells, particularly cancer cells. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for physiology, 1931.
He died 1 August 1970, Berlin, Germany.
