Princess of Saxe Coburg and Gotha Victoria Melita

German-British royalty, known to the royal families of Europe as "Ducky", the daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (later Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha) and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. She had both Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Czar Alexander II for grandparents.

She was coaxed by her grandmother Victoria to marry her homosexual cousin, Ernest Ludwig (known to the royal families as "Ernie"), the future Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, on 19 April 1894 in Coburg, Germany. The couple had one daughter, Eisabeth Marie Alice Viktoria, on 11 March 1895. The couple split in 1901, when a frustrated Ducky, liberated by the death of Queen Victoria, left Ernie for her lover, Grand Duke Kirill of Russia, whom she eventually married on 8 October 1905 in Tegernsee, Germany, after divorcing Ernie.

Little Elisabeth died of typhoid in Skierniewice, Poland on 16 November 1903. Ducky was not there at the time, but was alerted by telegram that her daughter was sick. Unfortunately, she did not make it in time to see her daughter alive again. She and Kirill eventually had two daughters and a son.

She died in Amorbach, Bavaria, Germany on 2 March 1936.

Sophie Dupré website, selling memorabilia, quotes a document from Queen Victoria of Great Britain, signed to the president of Peru:

"Our dearly beloved Daughter-in-law ... the Duchess of Edinburgh, Daughter of His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of all the Russias, was safely delivered of a Princess at the Sant Antonio Palace, Malta, at five minutes to six o'clock on the afternoon of the 25th Ultimo"

Dimitri Macedonsky's website on Russian succession quotes the Windsor Castle court circular, 27 November 1876, and The Times, 28 November 1876:

"Her Majesty received on Saturday night the joyful intelligence of the Duchess of Edinburgh's confinement at 6 o'clock that evening at Malta and of the birth of a Princess, Her Majesty's sixteenth granddaughter and twenty-fifth grandchild. Both the Duchess and infant Princess are geing on quite well."

Sy Scholfield quotes The London Gazette, 27 November 1876, p. 6526 for the 25th at "5.55 in the afternoon."
