American news reporter and anchor for New York's "Eyewitness News." From the political Stokes family (the former mayor of Cleveland Carl Stokes is her uncle and her dad is congressman Louis Stokes), she grew up in Washington, DC. In 1983 she won a beauty pageant. She began her career as a medical reporter in 1986 but had particular interest in the homeless and disadvantaged. From 1991-1992 she worked for a Baltimore TV station and won an Emmy for her reports on children who grow up in violence.. From 1992-1996 she was anchor for a Washington, DC affiliate of ABC. She joined MSNBC as its first African-American broadcaster. In 2000 she moved to a WABC-TV in New York City.
