Italian mathematician who is remembered today as a major contributor to algebraic geometry and as one of the founders of finite geometry. Among his main contributions to algebraic geometry are studies of birational invariants of algebraic varieties, singularities and algebraic surfaces. He died on 2 October 1977, aged 74, in Frascati, Italy.
