Writing under the pseudonym, Baron Corvo, he spent ten years wandering Europe; painting, tutoring and photography before doing any serious writing. His most important works, a historical account of the Borgias and a series of biographies of the lives of saints, was surpassed by his fictional autobiography as a Pope.
