Australian baby girl left to die after an abortion. When her mother was five months pregnant, she underwent an induced procedure to terminate the pregnancy. The infant showed clear signs of life when she was checked by a nurse after delivery at Darwin private Hospital. "She cried, she moved, she was breathing independently and she had an obvious heartbeat," coroner Mr. Barr testified.

Nonetheless, the baby was not given any medical treatment and remained in the delivery suite for 80 minutes until she died. Healthy for her gestation period, the baby was capable of feeling pain, but nothing was done to assess or otherwise care for her.

Kai Man Henry Cho, Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology director at Royal Darwin Hospital, told the court he had interviewed the 20-year-old mother of Baby J. He said she had a career in the defense forces and said she could not cope with a child. Dr Cho told the court he arranged for a termination to be carried out and said he would not attend the delivery, but was to be called if there were complications. The court heard testimony that the baby was delivered about 2:45 AM and died at 4:05 AM the same day.

Dr Cho said that early that morning the nursing staff called and said the baby had been born. "They did not mention the baby was breathing, but because of its non-viable age there was no reason to do anything about it," Dr Cho told the court. He accepted that he did not give the midwife any directions about care of the baby. An autopsy has revealed baby J died because of the abortion. The inquest is continuing.
