American child born to a mother who was in labor for more than 24 hours; the baby was her first child. During the birth, the doctor "took the baby," presumably with forceps. The child was a mess; one of his eyes was almost out, and he was blue all over. For many years, he worked as a craftsman and engineer. His accomplishments included the design of the heat shield for one of the first space capsules.
