Sy Scholfield quotes "The Literary Legacy of a 'poor Devil': The Life and Work of Robert Reitzel (1849-1898)" by Randall P. Donaldson (P. Lang, 2002), p. 11: "Robert Friedrich Reitzel was born at seven in the evening on the twenty-seventh of January, 1849, in the tiny village of Weitenau, which lies in the southernmost reaches of Baden along the border with Austria and not far from Switzerland and the Black Forest. He was baptized a Protestant fifteen days later in the local rectory as four of his parents' friends and relatives looked on as witnesses."

Weitenau is near Schopfheim.
