Because of the involvement of his son Friedrich Justus in the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on 20 July 1944 Perels was arrested in October 1944 and later deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp in Flossenbürg. Shortly after the liberation of the camp he died of exhaustion on 10 May 1945.
Sy Scholfield cites birth certificate quoted in "Ernst Perels (1882-1945): Lehrer und Forscher an der Berliner Universität" by Ines Oberling (Verlag für Regionalgeschichte, 2005), p. 55: "Am 2. August 1882, „zweidreiviertel Uhr nachmittags"1 ", kam in der elterlichen Wohnung im Tiergarten, Potsdamer Straße 10, das vierte Kind zur Welt: Ernst Joachim Friedrich Hans." [Translation: On 2 August 1882, at "two three-quarter o'clock in the afternoon," the fourth child was born in the family home at Potsdam, named: Ernst Joachim Friedrich Hans].
