Uruguayan novelist and short story writer. He was one of Latin America's most distinguished writers, earning Uruguay National Literature Prize in 1962. He was considered a senior member of the 'Generation of 45', a Uruguayan intellectual and literary movement.

He was imprisoned in 1974 by the Uruguayan military government, but was released after 6 months as a result of a protest by international literary figures. He fled to Spain where he spent the rest of his life: he died in Madrid in 1994.

Eduardo Castellanos quotes an interview with Onetti in Spanish "Le voy a contar algo. Nací a las seis de la mañana y mi madre en la infancia y después en la adolescencia, mientras estuve con ellos, me recordaba siempre: fue el único día que te levantaste temprano."

("Let me tell you something. I was born at six in the morning and my mother in childhood and later in adolescence, while I was with them, always said to me: it was the only day you got up early.")
