Claimant to the title of 17th Gyalwang Karmapa. The Karmapa is head of the Karma Kagyu school, one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Ogyen Trinley Dorje and Thaye Dorje are the persisting claimants to that office and title.

Born in Lhatok Township, Qamdo County, Tibet Autonomous Region, to primarily nomadic parents, Ogyen Trinley Dorje is said to have identified himself to family members as the Karmapa early in childhood. (The identification of the 17th Karmapa is disputed. See Karmapa controversy, in Wikipedia.) Known as Apo Gaga, he was seven years old before he was recognized by a search party headed by the Tai Situpa, following instructions left by the previous Karmapa in a prophetic letter and hidden in a locket entrusted to Tai Situpa. Ogyen Trinley Dorje was installed at Tsurphu Monastery, the traditional seat of the Karmapa in Tibet, with the official sanction of the Central People's Government who declared him to be a "living Buddha", the first time a communist Chinese government has recognised a tulku.

Source Notes

Sy Scholfield writes: BIRTH DATA: 26 June 1985, about 07:00 (7AM) AWST (8hE), Bakor, Tibet, China (Lhasa L&L: 29n40, 91e09). ASC: 4 Cancer. RR: B. Data from Ken Holmes [1] who in his book Karmapa" (Forres, Scotland: Altea, 1995) states: "The night before the birth, in late June, 1985, the father saw rainbows over the tent and was surprised, for the sun had already disappeared behind the mountains. The baby was born the next day without pain or dif[f]iculty, just before the first golden rays of sunlight burst into the tent. At the same time, a cuckoo landed on the yak-hair tent and sang" [2]. Mick Brown in his book "The Dance of 17 Lives: The Incredible True Story of Tibet's 17th Karmapa" (London: Bloomsbury, 2004) quotes the boy’s mother for a similar time and specifies the date: "born shortly before sunrise next morning, on 26 June 1985" (p. 150). His official website clarifies the date: "His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa turned 18 years old on June 26, 2003, according [to] the Western traditions of counting birthdays." [3].

PT finds website saying Bakor is in Eastern Tibet but there are no exact coordinates to be found in most atlases; coordinates for Lhasa are used.

Update 19 July 2012 by atr: The site http://www.kagyuoffice.org/karmapa.html says born into a nomad family in the Lhatok region of Eastern Tibet. Lhatok can be identified as modern Pinyin transcription Laduo, which designates a mountainous area near Zogang, for which coordinates were found in Google Maps. Wikipedia says Lhatok in Chamdo county which can be transcribed as 'Laduo in Qamdo county'. With the new coordinates, the Sun is 6° above the theoretical horizon at birth, but one needs to be aware that in a mountain area, the locally visble sunrise is much later than the astronomical sunrise, so that there is not necessarily contradiction with the report 'shortly before sunrise'. The time 7:00 is anyway just a guess.
