Indonesian earthquake of 7.7 magnitude striking in the Indian Ocean, with an epicenter about 220 miles south of Java. It was followed by a tsunami with waves over 10 feet high. The combination put the death toll at over 500 and left over 54,000 people homeless. According to the USGS, the quake occurred in the Indian Ocean, 235 km (145 miles) SSW of Tasikmalaya, Java, Indonesia and 250 km (155 miles) S of Bandung, Java, Indonesia. Most of the deaths resulted from the tsunami and most of the damage occurred in fishing villages and beaches on the south Java coast, including Pangandaran Beach.
