Japanese massacre of school children, 15 minutes of horror in which eight children were slaughtered and 15 wounded. The children were ages six to eight. The suspect, Mamoru Takuma, is a 37-year-old unemployed man who has a history of mental problems. He entered an elementary school and wordlessly began slashing at the children with a six-inch bladed kitchen knife until subdued by two teachers. It is the deadliest mass assault in Japan since subway gas attach by a doomsday cult in 1995, and the most heart-wrenching.
