American track and field star from high school who was reminiscent of a young colt. He was not a gifted runner, but was tenacious enough to become world-class, placing fourth in the 1972 Olympics Marathon. From 1972, he contributed over 70 articles to "Sport's Illustrated" on running and other sports, eventually going on to become a global sports reporter.
