Paula Modersohn-Becker

German painter and one of the most important representatives of early expressionism. In a brief career, cut short by an embolism at the age of 31, she created a number of groundbreaking images of great intensity. She is becoming recognized as the first female painter to paint female nudes. Using bold forays into subject matter and chromatic color choices, she and fellow-artists Picasso and Matisse introduced the world to modernism at the start of the twentieth century.

She died 21 November 1907.

Translation: In that corner Paula Becker was born on the morning of 8 February 1876 at a quarter to eleven. The letter Mathilde Becker wrote to her third child on her 30th birthday in February 1906 provides in its vivid portrayal of the sometimes quite dramatic circumstances of a home birth, a cultural and historical document of a special kind.
