Joseph Marechal (1983)

Belgian national archivist and historian.

In 1943 he obtained his PhD in history. He remained for many years in the Bruges repository, where he succeeded Joseph De Smet as head archivist in 1963. He finished his career in 1969 as head of the Ghent-Bruges department within the National Archives. He retired on 1 November 1976.

Marechal married Jeannine Dekker (1923-1999) and they had four sons, including Philippe Marechal who became curator of the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren and Dominique Marechal who became curator at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.

He died on 22 August 1993, aged 81.
