Biography

Russian Romantic writer, poet and painter, the most important Russian poet after Alexander Pushkin's death (in 1837) and the greatest figure in Russian Romanticism. His influence on later Russian literature is still felt in modern times, not only through his poetry, but also through his prose, which founded the tradition of the Russian psychological novel.

He died on 15 July 1841 (Julian calendar) as age 26, shot in a duel.

Source Notes

Mihail Lermontov quotes per email the Russian site http://www.realnyeludi.com/?p=blog&id=10597&review=1 which contains a rectified time 5:19:30 (GMT+3), done by Сергей Рыбаков. This is a somewhat strange rectification, using a timezone which did not exist in 1814. It corresponds to LMT 4:49:50.

Questioned about the documented birth time, ML replied "the poet was born in the night of 2nd to 3rd October". As the date of birth is commonly given as 3rd October, it must be between midnight and sunrise at 6.30 am local time. Lepoivre gives 6 am, without naming a source. ADB follows him at this point, as this time is still within the definition of 'during the night'.
