Finnish politician, Prime Minister from 1987-1990.

As a member of a commission formed to encourage the Irish Republican Army to give up its arms and negotiate a peace settlement, he is credited with facilitating the 1998 Belfast Agreement. The agreement was announced April 10, 1998. In 2000 he was appointed to a one-year term as the head of the UN's General Assembly. In 2003, then Secretary General of the UN, Kofi Annan, named Holkeri to another peace-seeking mission, this time as special representative to Kosovo.

He and his wife had two children.

After a long unspecified illness, he died on August 7, 2011 in Helsinki.
